“We have all heard the saying, ‘It takes a village to raise a child’ I believe this to be true. In volunteering with CLC I have been blessed to work with some of the very best child advocates (probably in the world). When parents are unable, for whatever reason to raise their children I have seen teams of the most compassionate people step in to paint the most accurate pictures for the judges to make the very most promising determinations for these children. It takes a “village” to make and keep these children out of harms way. Everyone plays a critically important role. However, in these cases the most important voices to be heard – are the voices of the children. I am honored to have the opportunity to speak for them in court about their goals and wishes. I am honored to be close enough to my clients to do this!”

VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH:
We are proud to announce Sara Erickson-Nelson as our May 2011 volunteer of the month.
Sara started volunteering with CLC in 2009. Since 2009, she has represented several children in many challenging cases. Her first case involved two clients and had numerous contested hearings. One of her clients had two separate trials. The first trial lasted several days and included her client’s testimony. The second trial also lasted several days. Sara has never missed a hearing for her clients and always explains the proceedings to them. She diligently prepares them for court and ensures their voices are heard.
Sara’s commitment to her clients is demonstrated by her support of one her client’s attempt to get an Order for Protection against the client’s parents. Sara supported this client as the client bravely stood up to her parents and sought protection.
Sara also helped another client with significant mental health needs due to the client’s Fetal Alcohol Affective Disorder, developmental delays and trauma. Sara’s client has numerous professionals involved in the client’s life. Sara consistently attends all her client’s school meetings, professional staff meetings and is fully aware of all her client’s service providers and plans.
Sara Erickson-Nelson earned her law degree in 2001 from Hamline University School of Law. From there she went on to study psychology graduating with a master’s in human development from St. Mary’s University. Sara lives in South Minneapolis with her husband, 3 children, 2 dogs and 1 cat.
We are proud to have Sara on our team!
